For example, in the mid to late ‘s, I was making a lot of work using appropriated imagery from vintage magazines. Everyone I know is doing something else to support their art practice. One thing that was a big epiphany for me was that I needed to look at my practice as one large thing, rather than a bunch of single pieces or projects. I work on a lot of different projects and mediums, but they all come down to these studio practices. This idea of togetherness is something that Kouri wants to spread. Generally, I try to have my projects reach into two of those pockets in order to be worth doing.

I wanted to work larger while keeping the same minimal approach, but my source material only came at the size of a magazine, so the only way to get bigger was to make denser compositions.

Honestly, my whole practice is kouei passion project. From print to canvas, wearables to design, Kouri is always looking for a chax challenge to take on, a different medium dhad test his tools. But for Kouri, before he can step into the spotlight for his solo, a vast amount of research needs to be done; he needs to be comfortable with his own tools and be able to play them with his eyes closed. Having a support system can be a huge help to artists just trying to make it.

I managed to bring in a few small projects while working various retail and food service jobs until I found a paid design internship at right about the two-year mark. I had to be only a couple years old. Kouri is originally from a small town north of Detroit and is a co-founder of the Chicago-based art and design incubator, The Post Family.

It totally blew my mind. Once I was able to surrender to that, it gave me permission to take more risks and not be as hung up on the success of each and every little piece or project I put together. The pieces are a celebration of childhood, and offer focal points for calm contemplation.

Everyone learns and masters different melodies and riffs and you develop a toolbox. An artist was someone who makes literal paintings on canvas that are really big and would sell for more than a car. In fact, I remember regularly having groups of people at my shared apartment, and I would play some music and work on the computer or collages while people socialized across the room. My first solo show in was a significant milestone. I had already done a few freelance design projects while in high school so my plan was to move to Chicago, buckle the hell down and get some clients while going to school full time.
